How to unlock more opportunity in life

Next time time you roll out a new initiative, watch how people self-select into 1 of 5 groups.

I’ve seen this time after time when I led post-sale teams at Adobe, Domo, Docebo, and now consult with CrushChurn.com.

Group 1️⃣: “I said I would do it, but I didn’t.”

This group is out of integrity, out of alignment, and as a result their relationships suffer. Things around them are chaotic.

Group 2️⃣: “I refused to do it when asked.” This group is in integrity–at least they are willing to say no–but they are generally unwilling to change and bring others down in the process.

Group 3️⃣: “I did it when asked, but with resistance.”

These are silent grumblers and the most dangerous of the 5 groups. They go through the motions but spread cancerous negativity everywhere they go. They do the bare minimum to get the job done.

Group 4️⃣: “I did it when asked, willingly.”

These are people who jump right in, willing to follow, and spread encouragement and positivity through the team.

Group 5️⃣: “I did it before I was asked.”

This is where true leadership is born. They see the need, often before others do, and create solutions with little thought for recognition or waiting to be “knighted” before they act.

The truth is we are all human and we float between the 5 groups at times–I know I do.

That’s why trends are more important than any single interaction.

Look objectively at the last 2 weeks.

How often do you find yourself in each group?

To people leaders: once you have enough interactions with a person to see a trend, don’t delay action.

🤝 Groups 1-3: Coach, mentor, correct, or part ways.

👍🏻 Group 4: Give them opportunities, encourage proactivity.

💪 Group 5: Set clear objectives and then get out of their way.
